For 2004-2005, 12 percent of PA students received transportation to non-public schools, a cost generally paid for by local school districts under PA law.
For 2004-2005, non-public school transportation represented 17 percent of the total school district transportation costs.
For 2004-2005, the transportation costs for a public student was $644.19; for a non-public student it was $971.49.
For 2004-2005 it cost 51 percent more per non-public student to transport than it did for the cost of transportation for combined public and non-public students.
The costs by school districts increased by an average of 59 percent for transporting public students from 1995 - 1996 and 2004 - 2005; and by 258 percent for transporting non-public students
for the same time period.
The change in costs for transporting public students from 1995 - 1996 and 2004 - 2005 ranged from -23 percent (Jenkintown SD) to 229 percent (Wilkensburg Borough SD).
The change in the Cheltenham SD was 193 percent; the Abington SD increased 81 percent.
The change in costs for transporting non public students from 1995 - 1996 and 2004 - 2005 ranged from -100 percent (21 school districts) to 5,371 percent (Cameron County SD).
The change in the Cheltenham SD was 257 percent; the Abington SD increased 74 percent.
It should be noted that the standard deviation for the increases were 18.384 for transporting public students from 1995 - 1996 and 2004 - 2005, and 30.0372 for transporting
non-public public students from 1995 - 1996 and 2004 - 2005. (Standard deviation can be explained as the mean of the mean. The closer to 0 the standard deviation, the less
spread out is the data.)
